Hello-
I have a Yorkshire Terrier and she is pregnant.  Normally they do not have big litters, but I want to cut their tails off and I was wondering when is a good time, and can I do that at home or should I take the puppies to a vet?
Thanks
LL

Hi Lindsey;
I'm sorry, but I will give no information on docking tails, clipping ears, or declawing cats.
Those are torturous things, and should not be done.
In most Civilkized countries, anmd even some third world countries this practice has been outlawed.
I am one of a comittee of several hundred that are campaigning to have such things outlawed in this country.
While docking tails and clipping ears does not cause the crippling that declawing cats and de-barking dogs does, it is cruel and inhumane, and I believe it should be stopped.

Answer
No, I'm not against showing dogs.
I am against altering them to satisfy the vanity of people who are not well informed.
I have owned several show dogs, and showed them. Have a display case full of ribbons and trophies. German Shepherds.
If it were illegal to dock their tails, then the show rules would be changed to show them with their tails the way they were born with .
There is no reason for docking the tails, except that some over stuffed dowager, at some time, decided they were cuter, to her, with their tails docked.
Animals have suffered long because of the ignorance of people.
Some people have been able to get their vanities and selfishness satisfied.
Luckily, the idiot that back in the 70s, demanded all farn animals be put in clothing.
Bulls and Stallions were to wear trousers, and cows and mares were to wear dresses and underwear.
sheep and other animals were to be clothed, as it was indecent for them to walk around in all their natural nakedness.
If you worked with animal rescue groups, as I do, and witnessed the crippling effects some of these senseless surgeries have on the poor animals, maybe you would be more concerned with the suffering of the animals, rather than what it can mean to your personal vanity.
I was fortunate enough to have my eyes opened, a long time ago.
I still have regrets that I actually had my Cocker Spaniel's tail docked, just because EVERYBODY did that.
Tail docking was done for HUMANS wishes, not for any purpose.
Some dogs are born with naturally docked tails. Australian Shepgerd, for instance.
God saw a reason to have them born with short tails.
Poodles were originally trimmed to help them deal with the elements. The hair was left around the ankles and places where they needed extra warmth, while hunting. You don't wound the animal to clip it's coat.
Docking tails of small breeds and clipping the ears of some breeds, for show, was the invention of human vanity.
I am not the one who is jaded!
