Question
My dog, Mason - a 9-year old American Staffordshire Terrier that I've had since he was 8-weeks old - was recently diagnosed with cirrhosis.  The vet says he has massive scarring on his liver.  She has prescribed a couple of supplements, a diuretic and Science Diet K/D.  He's been taking the medicine and special food for a week now, and his belly isn't going down at all.  I'm on a fixed income and this regimine is very expensive.  I'm wondering if I'm just prolonging the inevitable.  The doc said he won't last 6 months, even with the food and supplements.  My poor baby is so uncomfortable.  I'm just torn as to what I should be doing.  I'd really appreciate your opinion.  Thanks.

Answer
If I were in you shoes and this was my animal I would have to have it euthanized (put to sleep). I feel that the animal is suffering and as it's owner you need to determine what is best for your pet. An animal in this conditon should not be allowed to live a few more months because this is only a few more months of suffering, in my opinion. Since you recognize that the animal is suffering I believe that you will see that this is the best thing you can do for him. You have had a long 9 year companionship and I am sure that he has had a fun and great life. Now it is time to let him go so he doesn't have to suffer any longer. Talk this over with you vet. I simply do not know of anything else that can be done for him that would allow him to enjoy the rest of his life, no matter how long or short it would be. I am so sorry and hope that you can make the decision based on your pets needs. I know it will be a great loss to you but you simply must do what is right for your pet. God bless and again I am sorry your dog is going through this. Let me know if I can be of anymore assistance or if you have any further questions I will be glad to help.
