Dog Losing Hair

Question
My 1 1/2 yr old black lab/hound mix breed has started to lose his hair in patches on his body. It started out as one patch and now there are about 5 of them. These patches are about the size of a dime. They are not red or swollen, just a little flaky. He also keeps licking the groove where his back legs meet his body.   Any clue on what this could be? Should I just take him into the vet? He is eating fine and is otherwise acting normally.

Answer
Hi Dallas,

Many diseases and conditions are associated with hair cycle abnormalities. These include endocrine diseases such as hypothyroidism, pattern baldness, hair cycle arrest (Alopecia X), and Cushings Syndrome.

It is very important to make sure your dog does not have one of the endocrine diseases since these conditions affect more than just skin and hair. Your veterinarian can run special tests to diagnose hypothyroidism or Cushings Syndrome.

The most common problem associated with hypothyroidism is dry skin. The hair loss associated with hypothyroidism occurs primarily over the body, sparing the head and legs, and is usually not accompanied by itching or redness of the skin.

A vet exam sounds very much in order for your dog.

Best of luck,

Patti
