Question
My dog has some sort of problem within her nose. She will be going in for her second surgery in 4 month period. They are baffled as the first time they did the surgery and removed the mass and it grew back the very next month. They tried clyndamycin and steriods and that worked for short time. Then they switched to another med and its worse than ever:( Shes scheduled for another surgery April 11th.I could email a photo if need be of this mass. But its baffling the vets here as well as us.They are saying they wont operate again on this mass as rapidly as it grows they wont do the surgery this often. So the next option is putting her to sleep after this.Id hate to lose a family member for something someone might know how to treat.Any help would be appreciated. p.s. the mass takes up entire nasal passage on left side and has drainage from it as well from time to time.

Answer
It would appear that the quality of live of your beloved dog is being affected by this mass growing in her airway and you must consider what is best for your dog. Have any tissue samples been sent off to a lab to see if the mass is malignant, caused by bacteria, etc...? If so and the tissue is malignant you would have to consider the posibility that it is cancer and has potentially spread to other parts of the dogs body. There are many options for animals with cancer including radiation therapy and chemotherapy; however, these treatments are quite expensive and are not reccomended in all cases. Your veterinarian, who knows the history of your dog, is the best source you have and you should consider the course of action recommended by him/her. You must decide if you want to put your dog through frequent surgeries to fix a problem that will only keep coming back. Humane euthanasia is in my opinion a last option only when all else has failed, but is neccessary many times to avoid the needless suffering of animals whom we love dearly.
