dog park collar biting

Question
When I take my lab/pit mix to the dog park.  She grabs the other dogs' collars.  It seems a little aggressive to me and I don't think the other dogs like it.  What can I do to get her to stop?

Answer
It could be play, Pam, or it could be a form of dominance. Without being able to see her in person, I cannot say for sure. I'm surprised that your dog park doesn't have a rule that says that you must remove your dog's collar before letting him loose in the park.

I would recommend that you see if you can hire a behaviorist that can come out and observe your dog's behavior to determine if she is playing or not. If she isn't, then you may have to enlist the help of a trainer to stop the behavior using corrections. Because your dog has pitbull in her, you also need to be vigilant when you have her around other dogs, because pitbulls are instinctively dog aggressive to varying degrees, and that switch could be triggered at any moment. Please know that I am not saying this because I am biased against pitbulls. I actually own a pit/chow cross, and am active in fighting BSL.

You may have to put her on a long line so that you can verbally, then physically correct her if you need to.
