Puppy eating carpet

Question
Hi Nancy,
I hope you can help me with this.....I have a puppy who's approximately 8 months old, a lab/retriever mix.  He has eaten the carpet off 2 steps in my house, including the pad underneath! He's not chewing or nibbling the carpet, he's consuming it and having a hard time pooping.  when he does poop, it's the carpet!  First, I'm irritated the he's destroying my house, and second, I'm afraid the the carpet will eventually get lodged. I scold him when he does this, and he seems to know he's done wrong, but he continues. Any suggestions??
Thank you

Answer
Hello. I have to go through a few things because there is not enough information here. I am assuming that the dog has freedom to roam in the house in order for him to be able to do this without you seeing him? Labs mor3 then any other dog, are chewers until they learn not to. You need to crate the dog unless you can watch him fully. Then when he starts to go to the carpet to chew and you see him, tell him no in a stern voice, but give him a toy  he can chew and when he takes it, tell him good boy.You can not leave this dog unattended. I have a lab mix myself not much younger then that. These are dogs we are workin with, and they dont know better unless we teach them.Good luck.it really shouldnt take long
