Question
Hello
Can you give me some pointers on Potty training my new pup?
I take her out after feeding she goes then comes inside and pees, I wait but she will not go.
We gait off a room, take her out sometimes she goes, but most the time she comes in and goes pee pee in front of mudroom door.
Can you advise me?
Thank YOu

Answer
Hi Todd-
Housebreaking can sometimes seem like an endless task.  The biggest thing to remember is consistency.  Pups aren't able to hold their urine for long, therefore, until they are trained, you will need to take her out every 1/2 hour, to the same place, using the same door, with the same commands and be patient.  She needs to learn that this is the area in which you want her to go.  When she does go, TONS of praise will help her to remember.  If you've been working on this for awhile now (I'm saying 6-8 weeks) and she's still having the same problems, then it may be time for you to rub her nose in the urine and tell her "NO POTTY IN THE HOUSE!" and then immediately take her outside to her spot to finish.  You will probably need to wait longer than usual because she's already relieved herself somewhat in the house.  In this instance, you don't want to use a lot of verbal communication...you're mad at her and she needs to get her work done.  Just tell her to go potty and leave it at that.  If she does finish, then you are no longer mad at her and give her TONS of praise.  Then go to the area in the house and clean it up, but don't yell at her anymore for it.  Also, make sure that you clean it up well, with a bleach solution, to kill the scent...otherwise it will turn into an area familiar to her and she'll continue to pee there.  If she had been doing well and has suddenly started  this behavior, you might want to have her checked for a urinary tract infection.  Females tend to have them more than males and while they are young.  I hope this helps you out some, if I can help you out anymore, please don't hesitate to contact me.
Good luck!
