Question
Hello..i tried doing a search on this and didn't get much.I am taking care of a friends pug for the week and he is driving me crazy,,he is frantic over food..i give him the 1/2 cup in the morning and 1/2 cup in the evening..but he is constantly whining,scratching at my dogs tupperware container of food...if i didn't know better, i would think he was starving. My shih tzu will let her food sit in the bowl and eat a little at a time..this dogs cobbles his down in 30 seconds,,,then tries eating my dogs food. Is there a reason he does this?? Are all pugs like this? A friend i work with had a pug who ripped into a dog food bag and ate like 5 lbs of dog food and had to bed taken to the vet. Is that normal for any dog to eat to the point of death?? I have never had a dog who did this so I am very curious..thanks for any info..and Happy turkey day..

Answer
Hi Lisa;
Some dogs just are gluttons.
I don't think it is particular to any breed.
I find it mostly in dogs that were the runt of the litter.
Guess they got pushed away from the table and had to fight for a place setting when they were nursing their mom. LOL
I have never raised a pug, so I can't tell you if their breed leans more to gluttony.
1/2 cup twice does sound like a small amount to feed.
Read the back of the foor package for the right ammount, and if that is what is supposed to be fed, then ask your Veterinarian if you should be giving him a little more.
Pugs are a little heavier than Shih Tzus, I think, so he sould have a little more food she gets.
But your Veterinarian is the best source for information on that.
He/she can evaluate your dog and tell you if you could give him a little more food.
Some dogs don't gain as much as others on the same amount of food. It may be his energy level requires more food.
