Dog Pees very often

Question
QUESTION: I have a brother and sister who are pit bull mixes.  They are 13 months old and the female does fine with holding urination until she gets to go outside.  the male seems to need to pee very often-- at least 4 times a day, but usually 5-6 times a day.  His sister goes approx. 3 times per day.  He tends to overdrink if he gets a lot of excercise.  We live in Wisconsin, so with the cold climate, he is not drinking a lot, but still he goes very often.  My wife is home most of the day and we crate them at night.

ANSWER: I'm assuming your dog is neutered so no chance he is marking? If he is neutered how old was he when he was neutered? You  need to restrict his water, increase the number of times he goes out per day and probably go back to crating him in the day time for a couple of weeks to remind him that he can wait :). If he gets too thirsty while you're working on this give him some ice cubes, they are slow to melt and he can't gulp them down. Give him water every couple of hours and take him out pretty soon after :)
Good luck

QUESTION: Thanks for the reply!  He is neutered, and was neutered at approximately 14 weeks of age.  The rescue shelter required we had them neutered at that time.

I have noticed that sometimes they seem to be more willing than most dogs to eliminate in their crate.  They share a crate that seems to be the right size.  Are their any guidelines for this type of dog with regard to the crate size or anything else I may have missed?

Answer
I don't think it's the type of dog you're having the problem with. I think what you're dealing with is dogs that were raised as youngsters in an area too small for them to get out of their urine and poop. When that happens it's ingrained in them not to, unlike most dogs who hate to dirty their beds. Just try to let them out more often. Regulate their food and water. Don't leave either down for extended periods, no food after five PM no water after 9pm and see if that helps. It may take you awhile to correct what was ingrained in them as small pups but it can be done. lots of praise when they go outside and ignore mistakes.
good luck!
