Question
Hi,
I am about to get a female 11 month old lab tomorrow. I want her to be a house dog.  She has not been fixed.  How often will she go in heat and how bag do they bleed?  Is it possible to have that large of a dog in the house without having her fixed?  A friend said her dog bleed very badly.

Answer
They go into heat once about every six months

Unless you plan to breed, she should be fixed-just go to the local shelter and see how many dogs are there, and they are there because not enough dogs are fixed and too many are born and there's not enough homes for them all, over 5 million dogs are killed a year, just because there isn't enough homes

Also there's health reasons, like tumors and a deadly infection call pyrometreia, that can kill a female dog within hours

And yes they can be very messy and that is another reason to get her spayed
