Question
My 2.5 year old Yorkie was acting very sleepy yesterday, but since we were both just hanging out, I couldnt tell if he was sick or being lazy with me.  Until I saw him trembling.. I assumed he was "under the weather" and gave him lots of love hoping he'd sleep it off.  But it didnt get better... he was very lethargic all day, which is rare because even if he's sleeping he will get up to follow me anywhere, bathroom, kitchen...etc.  I eventually noticed he didnt poop or pee or eat... so I started inspecting his body for anything abnormal.  Everything appeared normal. Then I saw him circling very fast, asif he wanted to poop, but circling much faster almost frustrated then suddenly would sit.  I took him to his potty spot, and he just sat there.  Then moments later again, the rushed circling and sitting.  I tried touching his butt hole, and he didnt like it which is also strange because he usually likes when i scratch his itchy butt... Since he really didnt eat, I cant imagine what it could be, but then I remember he got into trash the day before, I thought I caught him in time, but who knows.  I know there were chicken bones in the trash, but i doubt he had much if any. ( but possibly? )... Could a chicken bone be poking his butt and preventing him from pooping?  His belly is not swollen.. it actually feels empty since he hasnt ate. This morning (day 2, but day 3 since the trash incident) he didnt go potty in the morning before I left for work.  I hope when I get home I find poop... but if not, what do I do?  Is this typically something that HAS to pass, or should I see a vet?  he has not been vomiting... he just appears sad...  Help.

Answer

Hi Sharyn,

Eating something he shouldn't have from your trash (including cooked Chicken bones) could indeed cause a blockage, or even perforate your dog's intestine. Blockages can be life threatening.

Paired with the fact your dog is acting lethargic, I'd say it would be best to have your vet examine him. If nothing is found, chalk it up to the cost of peace of mind!

Since you're going on day three of this, don't delay seeing your vet any longer. If whatever it is was going to pass, you would have seen improvement my now.

Best of luck,

Patti
