Liver / kidney problems

Question
My 10 year old Chihuahua had flu like symptoms 3 weeks ago.  He would not eat and no energy.  Took to vet and he was put on Amforal (1tsp every 12 hours) and Flagyl (1 tablet every 12 hours).  He was a lot better in 3 days.  Now 3 weeks later he is ill again.  Took to vet and they tell me his liver count is 690; kidney 102 and diabetes is 680.  They suggest putting him to sleep.  I am not sure this is what needs to be done.  Bo is drinking plenty of water, no appetite, has weakness in legs (which he had arthritis before this).  He is alert.  Do you think the medicine had anything to do with condition and what the chances are for him to get better?  What can I do?  Thanks.  Laura

Answer
I'm afraid with counts like the ones your dog has there is very little that can be done for him and he will go downhill very quickly from here.  His body is basically shutting down, with his diabetes score he could start to suffer from fits and brain damage, he is probably also in quite a bit of pain if his kidneys and liver are malfunctioning to that extent.
The medication is highly unlikely to have had anything to do with causing the condition but at this point they will not do him a lot of good either.
Very sorry for your situation
