Tail injury on my lab

Question
Hi! I had a question you may have had with one of your dogs...The other day I noticed a bald spot on my dog's tail, I got closer and noticed some blood around the hair and blood on the tail, she may be biting it cause there are small spots that look like little sores? Have you ever seen this before?
Thanks

Answer
She may be biting it to relieve an itch.  Are most of her calories coming from a commercial dog chow?  If not, cut out everything else, it is difficult to assure a balanced and complete diet otherwise.  Do not bathe her too often.  Most Labs can go indefinitely without a bath.  Keep them from rolling in stinky stuff and brush them several times a week, makes less hair o clean up too.  Those 2 steps will prevent most skin and coat problems.

You may need to put her in one of those lampshade collars until the tail has a chance to heal up.
