Dog Urination

Question
I had always understood that only female dogs are know to kill the lawns with their urine.  I have a 3 year old neutured, male Old English Sheepdog.  He constantly kills healthy lawns with his urine.  Is there any way of dealing with this?  I thought once I had heard that there was some kind of additive that you could put in their water that would neutralize the acid in the urine?  Is there anything that you are aware of?

Answer
Hi Janet-

Both male and female dogs will kill lawns- its ammonia in urine that kills a lawn, not some specific hormone to females. There are many products that you can buy that will counteract this, from spot cover fertilizer that you sprinkle on the lawn, to food additives for the dogs. Personally, I prefer the lawn treatment as I don't like adding chemicals to my dogs bloodstream that isn't naturally intended to be there, especially for the benefit of my lawn!
