Question
Hello.

Last June I got a 2 year old dachshund. He was not very well taken care of at his previous owners, who called themselves "breeders". Almost all of the dogs had fleas, very badly.

My dog, Oscar, is doing very well now, but we still have problems. He is very well trained. I've taught him almost all of the basic commands, but he still has accidents in the house. We try to take him out at the times when the training books say is a good time, right before he eats, after he eats, after he plays, before he goes to bed, when he wakes up. We also make sure he is out for at least 10 minutes. Everytime he "does his business" we praise him to death.

Yet, he still goes in the house. Oscar also gets very excited, which makes him go to the bathroom.

Please help! This is driving me crazy!

Answer
That is common in younger dogs, but usually they outgrow it by his age.  You have talked to the vet about it?  Much of what you say you are doing is just what I would say.  The praise is very important, keep it up.  I guess what you could do is take him out when he get excited.  You can even anticipate it.  Just before you expect an exciting event such as visitors, take him out.  When you finish a session on the computer and are going to give him some attention, start with a trip outside.  For unexpected excitement, try to pick him up before he urinates, and carry him out.
