registering a dog

Question
My husband and I are being given a purebred spaniel....they had a baby and are giving their pets away, blah, blah, blah. Anyway, one of our friends has a spaniel from this litter and right away AKC registered the puppy. Well, the dog that we are getting did not get registered. She is now 3 years old and they can not locate the original registration papers from the breeder. Is it even possible to register a dog at this age? If so, what process should we seek out to have this done?

Thank you!
Crystal

Answer

Hi Crystal,

I'm not sure if you can register an adult dog. There's a lot of info at the AKC web site about registering dogs you've lost the original registration application, so perhaps you can. You should go to the web address listed below, and check out the section for "Lost Paperwork".

http://www.akc.org/contact/answer_center/faq_dogreg.cfm

You can also contact the AKC Operations Center at 919-233-9767 between 8:30 and 5:00.

Registration itself is neither a guarantee nor even an indication of quality. No one examines the parent dogs or the puppies to see if they really qualify for registration. The only time AKC registration is necessary is if your dog is competing in a dog show.

Best of luck,
Patti
