Question
QUESTION: I am trying to get rid of spiders in the house, but have 2 cats and a very actively curious puppy (Pit-Boxer).  Do you have any ideas of methods to keep the dog from the chemical?  I''m hoping something fairly non-toxic like boric acid will work on spiders.

ANSWER: Hi Lynn and thanks so much for your question.

It is great to hear there is more interest in chemical-free insect control.

Any pest with an exoskeleton (a body-shell), can be controlled with products that desiccate. Some of these would be boric acid, borax, sevin, diatomaceous earth, etc. These are great methods where toxicity is a concern. The problem with spiders however, is getting them to walk through it, lol. They don't always follow a designated path (like ants) OR even "walk" along surfaces. Broadcasting products for ants, fleas, etc works great, but is not as effective with spiders.

A good thing that can be used to repel insects is Peppermint and Eucalyptus oils or the actual plants. Used or planted outside around areas where insects can enter, is effective in repelling them. You can also use the oils as a household "mist". It will make your home smell nice, while producing an environment that insects don't really like.

QUESTION: If I were to try some boric acid powder, how would I dispense it?  Would the dog walking through it or licking it hurt him?

Answer
Lynn,
As with any product, use it with caution. Even though it is relatively safe, not allowing a pet to come into direct contact is probably best.

To dispense it, I would use a squeezey type bottle (like a condiment dispenser) and "puff" it into nooks and crannies where spiders can gain entrance. Also, I would put it under your appliances, in cabinets, etc.

Here's some info I ran across while researching your question http://www.alsnetbiz.com/homeimprovement/boric_acid.html
but it doesn't mention it's safety with pets.

I don't think I would be comfortable spreading it across my floors (in the general traffic areas) and would prefer to use it lightly around the baseboards.
