Answer
Dog experts are like your family, having varied, strong opinions.  I have seen people post to dog forums that any raw bone, including chicken bones are safe because they won't splinter until cooked.  At the other extreme are the dog guide schools.  They forbid giving their dogs any bones or such products as rawhide.  Dogs don't need bones or rawhide.  My 14 year old Lab, Aster, never had a bone in her life and still has all of her teeth and in much better shape than any younger dog that gets bones.

Cooked or uncooked, small bones or those broken or gnawed down small enough can be gulped down either choking the dog or blocking its digestive tract.  Some bones don't need to splinter to have sharp points.  Any bone that the dog can break up is dangerous.

When we started raising dog guide puppies in 1991, it was hard for me to throw away bones and meaty scraps.  I have learned a lot about dogs since then.  I have seen how well properly cared for dogs do, Aster for instance.  Safest thing to do is just forget the bones and raw hide.
