defecation behavioral issue

Question
Hi, my 7 year old neutered male lab has recently and consistently been defecating on his beds.  We've changed his beds, moved his beds, etc. and he continues to defecate where he sleeps.  He does this after short or long walks, always around the same time in the morning.  It happens in the house, and he makes no attempt to go outside.  Other than the one event each day, he defecates outside normally.  Any ideas?

Answer
I find such a behavior problem surprising in a 7 year old.  Start with a vet checkup. If that doesn't turn up anything, it may be a leadership issue.  Has anything changed in the household?

The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts.  Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog.  Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones.  You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat.
