Little to no success urinating for our fur-baby

Question
I have a 18lbs Westie. Today she began acting as if she has a bladder infections, trying to urinate but little to no success. I have read many different responses stating to give 1000 mg Vitamin C and Cranberry Tablets for 3 days. If this is the correct information, do I only give ONE round daily for 3 days?

Answer
Hi Dana,

Be sure to give some probiotic or live culture yogurt to keep the intestional flora in balance. I would still recommend cranberry once or twice a day.  Best of luck.

Hi Dana,

Thank you for writing to me about your Westie.  Cranberry capsules are great for a bladder infection but even better or in conjunction with, use D-Manose. It's a highly concentrated form of crangerry in power form so you can sprinkle it on her food.

For the first day I would give at least two capsules to start and two more 2x during the day.  Then 1 capsule 3x a day and finally 2x a day.

My concern is your description of her not being able to urinate at all.  This could mean stones or a more serious problem and if she truly isn't able to pee, you MUST rush her to emergency asap.  Is she eating?  Drinking?  She must drink a good amount of liquids so one idea is to put some no salt broth in her water bowl to make it delicious.

Please pay close attention to exactly what is going on and do not assume that this is merely a bladder infection as it could be a sign of something more serious.  Start the cranberry and D-Manose immediately as time is of the essence.

Best of luck,
Shelley Davis
