Question
QUESTION: i have 2 yorkie poo that are about 4 to 5 months old and i gave them some treats the other night well a few hours later both of them were throwing up the rest of the night so i figured it upset there stomaches the next morning the little boy was back to normal playing and running around but the girl is still sick is still throwing up she eats a few bits of dog food if any her stomach is concaved and looks so in pain and so sad what do i do

ANSWER: Hi Michelyn,

Like people, dogs are individuals, and can have different reactions when they're ill. I think it's safe to assume there was something wrong with the treats, since both your dogs got sick, but the fact your female dog is still acting ill is just part of being a individual.

If your female dog still can't keep food down, and is acting lethargic, she needs to be examined by your veterinarian. If she's acting normally, and is able to keep water down, then you can try this:

Give your dog's irritated stomach a chance to calm down. Withhold all food for 12 hours. About 6 hours into this fast offer your puppy small sips of water, drinking too much will distend her already sore stomach and could cause more vomiting. A good way of controlling the amount of water your dog gets is to give her an ice cube to lick at.

At the end of the fast you can offer her small frequent meals (just a tablespoon) of a bland diet that is: 2/3 cooked white rice and 1/3 skinless boiled chicken breast (you can substitute with jarred chicken or turkey baby food).

If she is able to keep the bland diet down, give her another small meal 3-4 hours later. If it looks like she is recovering steadily then you can continue with her normal sized meals on the bland diet for the next two days.

If your dog continues to vomit on the bland diet, she'll need to be examined by your veterinarian.

Best of luck,

Patti

QUESTION: its been over 24 hours and she dont want to eat chicken and then on another web site i was told to give her plain yogart mix with some dog food she wont eat anything we gave her some pedilite and only a little and she cant hold that in either . she looks so sad and sick i cant take her to the vet til tomorrow what can i do til morning to help her

ANSWER: Hi Michelyn,

I'm sorry that your poor dog isn't doing better.

I wouldn't try feeding her any more tonight or tomorrow morning. If she's not vomiting when she hasn't drank or ate then that's okay. Don't give her anything else to drink or eat tonight, or tomorrow morning. Hopefully you'll be able to have her examined by your vet by tomorrow afternoon.
Giving your dog's stomach a rest, by not trying to coax her into eating is very helpful, and it doesn't sound like something you've tried.

If she is vomiting, even if she hasn't drank or ate, then continue to offer either the Pedilite or water, because you don't want her to become dehydrated. Becoming dehydrated is more of a concern than not eating. If you can do it, an eye dropper worth of fluids once an once an hour is better than giving her so much that she vomits again.

There's not much else for you to do. Just hold her, and comfort her. I know she appreciates having you close by.

Good luck!

QUESTION: sorry one more thing i saw online was it is ok to give her pepto bizmal it said 1 teaspoon for a 5 lbs. dog watered down do you think i should try to give her that i a eye dropper bottle and see if she is better in the morning

Answer
Hi Michelyn,

It's no bother at all!

If your dog isn't vomiting when she hasn't drank or ate, then there's no need to give her the Pepto. Letting her stomach have a rest is as good as medication.

If your dog is vomiting this often, it's for a reason. Pepto Bismol can be given to dogs who simply have an upset stomach for a day. When a dog continues to vomit, it needs a veterinary visit.

The dog dose for regular strength Pepto-Bismol liquid is 0.5-1 ml/pound every 6-8 hours by mouth. I think that translates to 1/4 teaspoon per 5 lbs. If you opt to give your dog the Pepto, and she throws it up, I wouldn't push it. Just let her stomach rest.

The only problem with medicating your dog is, if the vet thinks your dog might have an intestinal obstruction, x-rays might be required and Pepto-Bismol can interfere with reading of abdominal x-rays.

Because you don't know what it is you're dealing with, it's best to do the minimal. Some vet clinics have a doctor on call over nights and weekends. You can try contacting your regular vet, to see if a doctor can get back to you tonight. You also might find an "after hours" vet clinic listed in your yellow pages, or locate one here:

If you were able to talk to a vet, you'd be best advised for treatment until your dog can be seen.

I hope I've been a help.
