Rescued Wheaten Terrier

Question
About a year ago I got a female wheaten, I was told she is around 2 and a half and came to find out after I had taken her in that she was severely abused. We have gotten past most issues, like her fear aggression, counter surfing, food aggression etc...which lots of love and tons of patience. There is still one major problem. She will not go outside to do her business UNLESS she wants to. If I try to be alittle stern she cowers behind the bathtub or in "her" corner, while on her way piddling on the carpet. I don't yell at her or even really raise my voice at her but I am really running out of patience.  I just finished walking through and cleaning up the pee on the floor in the kitchen AGAIN. It's 3:30 am now and she was last out at 11 pm for almost a half an hour. I have tried going and sitting outside while she goes and she will usually just sit by my side or keep running to the door to go in. Oh did I mention she poops too. It's always in the kitchen thank god. I've tried the pee pads, she goes around them, I've tried leashing her and making her go out, still happens. I've had her checked by the vet and she has no medical issues. Also if she does let us know she wants to go out, I'm the only one that can let her out. If my boyfriend tries she turns around and "hides". I'm really frustrated, I love her to death but I'm getting to the point that I'm now up writing a dog expert at 3:30 in the morning...lol....I hope that you might have some suggestions for me....It would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Oh, Jade, I really wish I could be more help.  It does sound like you have your hands full.  I don't think a problem like this is something that can be easily remedied, especially through email.

What I would like to suggest to you is that you visit another website.  It is the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants.  www.iaabc.org

There is a link where you can search for a consultant, and when I searched in Canada, all of the provinces have at least one contact.  I would try to reach one of these people and see if they can help you, perhaps even by coming to your home and working with you and the dog.
