How to choose a dog

Question
Hi, I am struggling with how to select a dog.  My daughter (age 10) has been begging me for a dog for several years now.  She wants a dog she can love, take care of, play with, and take out for walks.
I grew up with a black lab who shed like crazy and had skin problems.  She was a wonderful dog but my mother always complained about the amount of cleaning she had to do (not to mention the dog odor in our house).  Since my husband and I both work, it is important to me to have a dog that does not add a heavy burden in the cleaning end of things as well as does not mind being alone for an 8 hour day.  I can come home at lunch time some days but not consistently 5 days a week.
I don't know that it is even fair to a dog to be alone for so long and this is why I have been holding off on adopting/buying a dog.
If you have any ideas on dog breeds that you thing would work in my situation, I would appreciate your input.

Answer
First of all, if you are gone a long time during the day,, I would suggest you adopt an older dog.
Go to a rescue that has foster homes...This way someone has been living with the dog and knows it's temperament.  You want a dog at least 20 months old.
Now for the shedding....  The following dogs have good temperaments and do not shed a lot.  All dogs shed a bit, but some much less than other....
Bichon
poodle (standard is the best if you can afford the haircuts)  smaller ones are cheaper to groom
schnauzer (mini only)
wire haired dachshund (wire hair is the sweetest)
border terrier
fox terrier,, watch temperament...ask about that some are wonderful and some are not
welch terrier
shih tzu chi hua hua cross bread
west highland white terrier (not good with cats)  sheds slightly  good with people.
cairn terrier
ok i hope this helps you out.
