Min-Pin housebreaking

Question
QUESTION: I have a min-pin approx 3 years old. It does not matter if we take him out alot or not, he will urinate in one of the two bedrooms. He will rarely go in his crate and he is there all day but during the course of the night, he will sneak off to a bedroom and go. Just a little.
Also, he has a foul odor that secrets from his rear end occasionally. Not sure if it is him spraying although he is neutured or if something is wrong with him.

ANSWER: Hi, Karen,

The foul odor could mean that his anal glands are impacted.  Your vet needs to examine the dog and empty them if needed.  Dogs do not spray the way male cats do, which is a marking behavior.  Dogs pee to make their territory.

He is 3 years old now.  How long has he been doing this urinating in the bedroom?

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: He used to do it often then it seemed as if he stopped and now I have noticed he is doing it again. Nothing has changed in the household.

Answer
If he can hold his bladder while he's in his crate, then I would keep him in there at night as well.  If you feel guilty about this, move his crate into your bedroom at night.

I would have him checked for urinary infection, especially since he has the other foul odor.  You can have the vet check both thing at the same time.

Depending on the outcome of the vet visit (assuming there is no medical reason for his urinating), you  may have to reinstitute housebreaking techniques.

You also need to clean the areas where he has been going thoroughly in order to remove smells.

I'm including some information that I hope will be helpful.
