antihistamine for dogs

Question
I have 3 shih tzus, all about 18 lbs each, with allergic reactions to fleas.  We are treating the fleas right now with frontline and it was suggested I get the vet to prescribe an antihistamine for their itching until the flea med kicks in.  I have read that I can give them Benadryl caps but am afraid of overdosing them.  Can you give me the dosage for their size and how often I can give it to them?  They're scratching their fur off with the itching right now.  Please help Toby, Tessa and Snickers.

Answer
Hello Lorri, Yes, it is 1 tsp. per 12 lbs.  You can give them children's benadryl.  If you happen to give them to much, usually what will happen is that they will sleep, or be a little groggy.  Also remember to treat the house and the dogs environment for fleas as well as the dogs.  Thanks for asking, Cindy Lou :)
