Question
I have 2 puppies, both are 3 months old. I was wondering what kind of flea and tick medicine to use on them as they play with each other all the time. I afraid to put medicine on them as they do bite and lick each other. Will that hurt them?

Answer
Hi Gail,

Flea and tick preventatives are meant to be used on dogs, and puppies. It goes without saying that a dog will lick itself, and puppies will be mouthy. At 3 months old, your pups are old enough to be treated with a flea/tick preventive, you just want to make sure that you get a one labeled safe for puppies four weeks of age and older.

You need not worry that your dogs will be poisoned by a flea/tick preventive. It's actually a lot more dangerous not to treat them. Fleas can carry tapeworms, and ticks can carry Lyme disease.

I haven't found any "natural" flea or tick preventive that worked well as the once a month topical treatments such as Advantage, K9 Advantix, Frontline, Revolution, etc. that you can get through your vet.

If you are unsure as to which one is right for your puppies, ask your veterinarian.

I hope I've been a help.
Best of luck,
Patti
