Question
Can humans acquire roundworms from dogs?

Answer
Yes.
Humans can aquire a worm known as toxocara canis from dogs and also its feline equivalent - toxocara catis from cats.  Toxocara causes rather nastier disease in humans than in dogs as it may encyst in the eye (a condition known as ocular larvae migrans) causing blindness.  It is therefore essential to de-worm all dogs regularly, wash hands after handling dogs and clear away dog faeces as soon as humanly possible to prevent the life cycle of the worm from being completed in your garden!
Hope this helps
