Question
Hi there, My mum`s dog (staffieXpitbull)just gave birth two days ago. she had two puppies and this her second litter. Yoda is 7yrs old and she is scatching her carpet matt acting as if she still wants to have more pups. She has beeen to the vet and the vet has given a hormonal injection for a clean out. The vet said that he can`t feel anything in there. She is not eating and does not seem to have a temp. She is nursing the pups well. She looks like she is going into labour. No complications in any other pregnancies. Why is she doing this? Could she have more pups to come?

Answer
Megan,
There is always a possibility that she has a pup left, but more than likely she is having contractions from the shot.  On the second plus  pregnancies the uterus is larger and has more shrinking to do to get back to normal.  Thus she is having "contractions" and she thinks she is having another puppy..   If she continues not eating,  i have found a great trick.  I make up a mushy food and put it on the pups backs, she cleans it off and ...........eats the food.    If she doesn't of course you are washing pups so try with a small amount first.  Also, give her some cottage cheese, it is a good source of calcium.
