Pup ingested maggots

Question
I have an 11 week old Lab.  She ate a dead baby bird and for the past 3
days has maggots coming from her stools.  I took her to the vet and they
said she just has to pass them.  I'm very concerned because so much
maggots come out.  Almost more than the stool.  Is this toxic to my puppy?
Are the maggots alive inside her?  Are they eating her instestines?  About
how long before all these maggots are gone?

She appears fine...Eats, sleeps, plays, etc.

Please help!

Answer
Hi Cathy,

Although it is certainly an alarming sight, I think the maggots probably can't survive to live within your dog's stomach's because of the acid.

The fact your dog is acting normal and is eating and  playing etc. is your sign that she's feeling fine. If she begins to vomit, or has diarrhea, or begins to act listless, then you'll know to call the vet. But I think she's going to be okay!

I think you should listen to the vet's advice. If this continues to be a problem after another 3 days, then contact you vet and tell him how long the problem has been going on. You may need to bring the dog in for another office visit.

Best of luck.
