Question
QUESTION: are they a good family pet? is there any thing that we should be aware of? are they a smart dog?

ANSWER: they are one of my favorite breeds, they are intelligent and easy to train-the downside is males can be dog aggressive(neutering often solves this)and unfortunately they don't live long usually 6-10 years as they are prone to cancer

but if you are prepared for a short life they make amazing pets

QUESTION: HOW OFTEN DO THEY GET CANCER.IS IT SOMETHING WE SHOULD STRAY AWAY FROM THIS BREED?ARE THEY GOOD WITH LITTLE KIDS?WE ARE THINKING ABOUT A FEMALE.WE HAVE TWO GRAND KIDS AGES 5&6 AND ONE COMING ABOUT CHIRSTMAS.DO YOU KNOW THE PRECENTAGE THAT GETS CANCER?

Answer
While I am not sure of the exacat numbers, but they probably get cancer more then other breeds, they are also somewhat prone to heart problems as well-but some boxers do live to be as old as 14,so it might be 50/50 or a little higer maybe even 70%

Boxers are excellent with kids, they tend to be protective of children and love them-but never leave dogs alone with kids, even for a minute regardless of breed
