kidney problem in puppy

Question
hi...my boxer pup went in for a spay last week...we had some pre-op blood work done, it showed certain levels having to do with her kidneys were high...while doing the spay, the vet went to explore the kidneys only to find the left kidney was very tiny.  we are now giving her meds to help with the kidney and she is also getting sub-q fluids every other day.  she goes back in 10 days for a recheck...the only thing is she is as normal as can be.  i see alot of postings where people have pups/dogs with kidney trouble and they usually have more symptoms, she has none.  i just don't understand how this could be something so bad..any info on this will help us out greatly...or any ideas where we can find other people with the same problems.

Answer
Hi Jen :-)

This sounds like a under-developed Kidney. I don't know much specifically about this area but your Dog will have a low urination content. By this I mean he will urinate more frequently than other Dogs and require more Fluids.

This is because his Kidney is very small and as he gets older and bigger, his body will require more "help" in keeping this one small Kidney from working correctly and also from decreasing the pressure and work the Kidney needs to do.

You may not experience any symptoms now, but at this time it's preventative methods which is required and also treatment. Medication will prevent (at this time) any serious conditions later arising such as Kidney failure. But I must let you know, it is very possible that your puppy will go into Kidney failure when he is around 5-8 years old.

Take care and all the best and please leave me a comment.
