Question
QUESTION:         PLEASE HELP!!!!!
I am the owner of a nine week old sharpi mix puppy. Also I am a single mother of 5 children, my mother dog was not fixed because we had planned on breeding her, well she became pregnate by an unknown father. I know it is very dangerous, and I am a good pet owner we have just fallen on some very hard times financially, but our 3 puppies have not been vaccinated yet. The mother has had all of her shots though.  On to the problem, this morning my children went out to play with the puppies and they came in to tell me that the young female was shaking. At first I thought it was just due to the cold until they returned about 20 mins. later and said something was bad wrong. We brought her in and it was like she was having a seziure she shook all over and could stand and try to walk but couldnt keep her balance. She ate some dogfood and drank a small amount, at the time her breathing seemed good but her eyes had a zombie look in them. It has been about one hour she is resting and honestly at times looks like shes dying her breathing has gotten faster she stops shaking until you move her or she tries to stand. Please I know you cant give me a sure diagnosis, but I have absolutly NO money to take her to the vet will you please tell me somethings I can try to make her better!!! My children love this dog and dont have any idea what happened we do know she wasnt dropped or hit by a car I dont think anything happened to her physically and am at a loss of what to do for her. THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS YOU FOR WHAT YOU DO, Also I'm seeking good homes for the other puppies we live in Kentucky her mother has a champion bloodline, ther is little girl who is sick and 2 young males winkie, and milkshake thanks again

ANSWER: you have a very sick puppy and there is nothing I can suggest for you to do at home. I really would if I could but the puppy needs to see a vet.
cause of the seizuring could be:
toxicity; have you applied flea treatment recently, any snail bait in the yard?
vitamin deficiency such as hypocalcaemia, is the puppy getting enough milk from its mum or if not drinking from the mum anymore is it receiving a good quality diet with enough calcium in it?
OR
either a systemic problem such as kidney or liver failure or a neurological problem such as a brain tumour.

Considering the sudden onset of the seizures and the fact the puppy was outside I am highly suspiscious that it may have eaten something toxic in your backyard such as snail bait, fertiliser, compost etc do a thorough check of your backyard.

The puppy needs to see a vet, if you cannot afford the treatment it needs to be euthanased otherwise it will suffer, eventually with the seizure activity the puppy's temperature will get so high it literally fries its brain, the puppy will go into DIC the blood will be unable to clot and the puppy will die a long painful death. Please please please take it to the vet

QUESTION:      Thank you so much for your advice and concern. We left the puppy with my oldest daughter while we went to church, but before leaving just to give it a shot i gave the pup about a half a teaspoon of sugar before I left my daughter said within the hour that she just got up and started acting completely normal. Since getting your advice we have checked the yard for chemicals and found nothing. And as for you question about milk the pups are nearly weaned, but the diet is really good they get a generous serving of Puppy Chow 3 times a day. I have no income until the first of the month and have already made the puppies appointments with the vet, and I am well aware that she needs to go NOW and I've been asking family members if they could help until I can pay them back, hopefully someone will come through, but for know all I know to do is watch her closely to see if the activity has stopped. Thank you so much for your help, please try not to worry about her I promise if it continues even before I get the money that I will take her from vet to vet begging for help for her, I would never let her suffer a long painful death, or life. Do you think maybe the puppy could have diabetes? I will get her checked out at the very soonest opportunity. Thank you again and God Bless

Answer
yes the puppy could have diabetes if it responded to sugar. This is quite a concern in such a young dog. Sometimes puppies can go into hpyoglyceamia if they are unwell and have been vomiting etc or perhaps there is an underlying condition causing her body not to process insulin, could possibly be a pancreas problem. This puppy cannot be rehomed, you either need to keep it yourself and treat it or euthanase it. You cannot pass this puppy onto someone else who will be left with a sick puppy. I hope someone in your family helps you out so you can take the puppy to the vet i also hope you start saving now so that you can desex your dog
