Question
I have a 7 month old Brittany Spaniel, male.  He is a wonderful puppy!  Now that the cold is here, he is in the house most of the time.  We keep a close eye on him because his favorite thing is to chew! I spend a good chunk of money at the pet store each month on chew toys, but he goes through these toys very fast.  Can you please recommend some really tough toys that will last a bit longer?  I try to keep a good assortment and switch the toys out so he won't get bored with them.  Thanks for your time!

Answer
I like to give mine the largest beef knuckle bones that I can find.... the beef-basted ones. They really like those. You could also get him a Kong and put a bit of peanut butter in it, or even stuff it with some chunks of dog biscuits or kibble.

Oh, another "toy" that is indestructible can be found at a farm supply such as Fleet Farm. I don't know what they are called, but they are black, rubber, and a narrow cone-shaped affair about 9" long. They are used for the liners of milking machines and fit over a cow's teat. One of mine was out in the dogyard for 12 years before I had to throw it away!

Teach him to retrieve if he isn't already, and throw balls or other toys (carefully) inside or out on a regular basis to tire him out a bit. Walking would be good for both of you if it isn't too cold outside. A tired dog is a good, happy dog!

Remember chewing is a stress-reliever, but some dogs definitely seem to need it more than others.
