Question
I have 2 rescued gsd. I have had them for 3 years and they have always been house trained.  However, recently my male dog has started peeing indoors. He has been treated for an infection but he has continued.  He never pees when I am at home but has done so once in front of my son.  I go to work but my mother in law lets them out frequently.  On two occasions now he has come in after going outside and cocked his leg and peed up furniture in front of her.  I have cleaned all areas with appropriate cleaner.  I just do not know what to do and I am desperate for an answer can you help

Answer

Hi Lynn,

I assume the infection your male dog was treated for was a urinary tract infection. Because your dog is still not able to hold his urine, it's entirely possible that the infection either wasn't totally knocked out, or it was and has flared up again. Both scenarios are entirely possible, as it's common for urinary tract infections to recur.  Recurrent and persistent UTI are commonly seen in the German Shepherd breed. Your first course of action should be to have your vet test your dog for a UTI. He may need to be on medication for a longer period of time than he was previously.

Until an infection can be either confirmed or ruled out, give your dog more frequent opportunities to relieve himself outside, so he'll be less likely to have accidents inside. Clean the areas where he's had accidents in your home with an enzymatic cleaner, such as Nature's Miracle or Simple Solution, so he'll be less likely to remark in those areas.

Best of luck,

Patti
