Question
I live in Atlanta, GA and have a english springer spaniel.  He lives in a fenced in backyard and has a 2 dog dog-house.  He is 3 years old and has been with us since he was 8 weeks old.  I want to get another dog to give him company. I want to know which dog will get along with him and can stay outside with him.  I want to get a dog from a adoption center and don't want to pay for an expensive breed.

Answer
Zimmy, I cannot tell you a specific breed of dog that will get along with your current dog. Every dog is different. I would suggest that you go visit your local shelters, and take him along with you in case you find a dog you like. You can begin your search at http://www.petfinder.com and if you see a dog, or dogs, you are interested in, then you can make the trip to that shelter to meet him or her.

Talk to the people at the shelter, and tell them you need a dog that can spend time outside without overheating, since the dog would be spending some of its time out there with your other dog. Tell them you've brought your dog along with you in case you find a dog you like, so that you can introduce them and make sure they get along okay. Typically, a male and a female will end up getting along better than two males or two females. I shouldn't have to tell you that both dogs should be neutered. I'd try to get a dog that was about the same age, size, and energy level as your dog.

I >>will<< tell you that most shelters will not adopt out to people who keep their dogs outside all the time. They want their animals to be a part of the family, not just a 'lawn ornament' that has to be fed and watered.
