Rapid weight gain and vomiting

Question
I have a 7 year old boxer who has started to vomit almost once a day after he drinks water. He has put on 16 pounds in one year. We had thought that this was a result of toddlers in the house. Up until last year he was only fed dry dog food and dog snacks once in a while. Very rare did he get human food. The vomit is typically just food and water. There does not seem to be any yellow bile. I was wondering if you know what may be causing the vomiting.
Thank you

Answer
Hi Robert,

Your dog may well have Hypothyroidism. Basically that's a thyroid hormone deficiency that affects the very metabolism of food, thus leading to weight gain. Vomiting can also be a symptom.

Diagnosis of this disease is done by a series of blood tests. These tests are fairly common and can be in your veterinarian's office.

Left untreated, your dog will become lethargic he dog experience a mental dullness, and his heart rate can slow.

Hypothyroidism is a gradual process which takes months to one year to develop. Since you've been noticing this problem for a year, it's time to have him examined by your veterinarian.

Best of luck,
Patti
