Coughing up foam and blood

Question
I know you may not be able to help but we have a 3 year old lab who started coughing up bloody foam. I am not sure if you have ever seen this before. We have a neighbor who isn't happy with us or our dog and we are worried she maybe gave her something. If you can help or have any ideas I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

Answer
Hi Julie,

If you think your dog has been poisoned, contact your veterinarian or poison control immediately. The animal poison control center is at:(888) 426-4435. (A $60 consultation fee may be applied to your credit card).

Sometimes tiny blood vessels burst due to the force of the action of vomiting or coughing, this can explain a small amount of blood.  Also, pulmonary vascular disease associated with arterial blood clots may result in the coughing of blood, a condition termed hemoptysis. Dogs with hyperadrenocorticism, pancreatitis, immune mediated hemolytic anemia or heartworm disease are at increased risk for pulmonary thromboembolism that may cause bloody fluid to exude into the airways.
That said, your best bet in a true emergency is with your veterinarian.

Best of luck,
Patti
