Dark Red Rashes on Italian Greyhound

Question
We are dog sitting my mother-in-laws 6 year old Italian Greyhound.  We have only had him a couple of hours and he has developed a deep red rash on his front leg elbows, on the inside of his back legs, and a few spots on his stomach.  I think it may be from eating some of a Purina Busy Bone which was for our dog (a collie-mix).  I just want to know if this sounds like a food reaction and what I should do for it.

Answer
Hi Thera,

Thank you for writing to me.  The most expedient way to deal with this allergic reaction is with some baby benedryl.Administer according to weight.

Hopefully your mother-in-law left the name and number of her vet for emergency purposes.  You can also call and ask the vet tech what they recommend for a dose of benedryl but I think you will do fine on your own.

Monitor the dog and make sure he is drinking water and that he doesn't go into anaphlactic shock.

Best of luck.  I adore Italian Greyhounds!
