Finding the perfect dog

Hi, I have been searching for the right dog to bring into our family. I have never had a dog before and I don't know much about them (breed wise). I have 2 small children at home and I need a dog that is great with children (and not just mine, but other people's kids). I dont want a bark that is intimidating by constant barking and I dont have the time for a dog that needs to be run alot. I want a nice house dog that will still play outside a bit and be ok on walks. I just cant spend an hour or two a day letting in run wild through fields and such.  Do you have any suggestions on what type of dog would best fit our lifestyle?
