Question
Hi Patti,

Thanks for clarifying what that toe is called. i have put peroxide on it one more time before we head to put. i also put her little dog cone thing on her head that she had on when she got spayed (she is only 8 months old). coincidentally, my puppy's name is Pattie too :)

so should i continue to use the peroxide? im just wondering if i should go ahead and take her to the vet and put her on some antibiotics.

thanks so much for answering so quickly! awesome!

Megan

Answer
Hi Megan,

If you're overly diligent with the peroxide, it can prevent healing.
Hydrogen peroxide (and rubbing alcohol) can be toxic to skin cells, impeding healing. The chemical reaction (and bubbling) that occurs when hydrogen peroxide hits the skin isn't only cleaning the wound --it's killing healthy cells.

The most effective way to get rid of debris and bacteria without damaging healthy tissue is flushing the wound out with water. Put the wound under a faucet, or spray it with the nozzle on the kitchen sink. Flush it with water to clear it of all debris. If you are worried about the bandage sticking to the wound, consider using an antibacterial ointment that contains bacitracin or neomycin to keep the area lubricated.

Because dog feet have a tendency to get dirty, you could use a product like 3M Pet Care Liquid Bandage Spray, or Nexaband Skin Sealer. They provides a skin shield that promotes healing, and doesn't sting when applied.

Keep an eye on the dew claw. If the area looks red, feels warm or hot, or looks swollen or inflamed, your dog needs to be examined by your veterinarian.

Good luck!
Patti
