Question
HELP! My husband arrived home early and decided to walk our pom Princess, in doing so he felt that she was getting over heated in the sun and decided to take it upon himself to shave my poor baby! Unfortunately he failed to contact me prior to making this rash decision and has shaved my pom way down and by way down I mean that you can see her skin! I have read your post of the undercoats being ruined. My question is when will I know if her coat is ruined? I have cried over this for days now and I am also taking her to the vet. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Answer

Hi Jessica,

You are correct, you aren't supposed to shave a Pomeranian, but what's done is done. Her coat will eventually grow back.

You might consider giving Princess an Omega 3 & 6 fatty acid supplement to help support her skin and coat. The optimal omega-6:omega-3 fatty acid ratio to maintain a healthy skin and coat in dogs is between 5:1 and 10:1. This means that between 5 and 10 omega-6 fatty acids should be present for every 1 omega-3 fatty acid.

In the future, don't allow your husband to walk your dog in the heat of the day, and to inform him to give the dog shade and water if she looks over heated.

Best of luck,

Patti
