yorkie with dandruff & scabs

Question
Hi, I just bought a Yorkie named Baylor.  He is almost 10 weeks, and he is super tiny.  He has some flaky dandruff and his skin is full of scabs that he continues to scratch.  The breeder gave me some oatmeal shampoo and conditioner for dogs, but I'm really concerned when I feel all the bumps.  Baylor's little sister had the same condition.  I'm taking him to the vet tomorrow for an exam, but I just wanted to know if it sounded dentrimental to his health.  I'm attached and I'm willing to put the effort into making him better.  I'm using the food the breeder gave, and I'm trying to transition him into an all natural dog food made with flax seed oil, omega 3s and 5 grain balance of carbs.  What else do you suggest?  Will he be cured?

Answer
It's possible it just is dry skin, in which case the oatmeal shampoo will definitely help.  Its also possible that he had some fleas which made him scratch.  The scabs could even be from the other puppies, although I'm less inclined to think that is the case since you say is itchy.  If your puppy's sister had the same condition then I would definitely have the vet do a skin scrape to check for mites.  Demodex is sometimes called mange, and it is passed from the mother to the puppies. (You can't get it, only sarcoptic mange is contagious).  Once your vet takes a look at him I'm sure he may have some other recommendations, but it sounds like you are right on track with the food as well. (Make sure it is a puppy food).  If it is allergy related, it is possible that this will be an ongoing problem, but hopefully its something that can be taken care of quickly.
