DOG EATING OWN POOP

Question
WE HAVE A 5 MONTH OLD PUPPY WHO IS EATING HER OWN POOP.  SHE HAS BEEN DOING THIS EVER SINCE WE GOT HER AT 10 WEEKS.  WE RUSH OUT AND PICK IT UP RIGHT AWAY.  SOMETIMES WE MISS ONE OR TWO BUT SHE MANAGES TO FIND IT.  I READ THAT PUTTING CRUSHED PINEAPPLE IN THEIR FOOD WILL MAKE THEM QUIT. IT DID FOR ABOUT 3 DAYS AND NOW SHE IS RIGHT BACK AT IT.  MAYBE ITS THE WAY SHE EATS?  SHE LOOKS LIKE SHE IS SUCKING IN HER STOMACH AND INHALING THE FOOD.
I ALSO READ THAT THEY SHOULD OUTGROW IT.  ANY IDEAS?
THANKS
EVE

Answer
You could try canned pumpkin or the commercial products Forbid or Deter.  It is a common problem, and I usually rely on clean up.  And yes, many puppies do outgrow it.

It is also common for a 5 month to eat very rapidly.  If you are having any trouble with her throwing up or even are afraid she will choke, there are 2 workable solutions.  Spread her food out on a cookie sheet of something.  Some of my friends just throw it on the floor of the crate.  Another technique is to put large rocks in the food bowl, much too large to be swallowed.  Either way keeps the dog from getting one big mouthful after another.

Do not let her eating habits lead to over feeding her.  Use the technique in this illustrated guide to adjuster chow to what she need, not what she wants, http://www.puppychow.com/products/popup_body_condition.aspx
