Question
I have a 10 year old pure breed yellow lab. I need help!! About 3 weeks ago she stopped eating. I brought her to the vet and her bloodwork looked good and no worms. vet did xray and it showed alot of gas in the stomach , I forgot to mention that she burped alot and her stomach made noises and green mucus in eyes. Her breathing was very slow but the vet said it was from the gas but her heart sounded great. The vet gave her barium and about 3 hours later did another xray and it showed a blockage in the gi tract. we took her home and next day brought her back and did another xray and it showed that the barium went all the way thru. we took her home and she would eat rice and chicken and started doing alot better. Every now and then her eyes would have green mucus but it would go away. now its been 2 days and I can't get her to eat and the green mucus is back very bad and burping alot again. her breathing is also slow again. The vet never could tell what was wrong with her they thought maybe it was from the blockage, which by the way she pooed the next day after the barium and it was alittle hard but it was because it had grass and grain like material in it. Please any info you can offer I would appreciate it I love my dog and I just want her better.

Answer

Hi Kelley,

It's normal for a dog to have odd bowel movements after having the upper gastrointestinal (GI) barium tests run.

If your dog's symptoms are returning, you need to report this back to your vet. Nobody on the Internet can diagnose your dog. Running one test (such as the GI test you had done) and getting inconclusive results isn't the end of the line, it means additional testing is necessary. It would have been nice if you got answers from that one test, but it doesn't always work out that way.

There are times when it's helpful to have a veterinary specialist examine your dog. This may be one of those times, if you think your regular vet doesn't have enough experience with the problem, or is missing something. If your vet can't give you a referral, you may be able to locate a Veterinary Internist here:

The discharge from your dog's eyes might be a separate unrelated condition form her current stomach troubles.  A telltale sign of an eye infection is the appearance of the discharge: It will often be thick, yellow, gray, or green.

Sorry that I couldn't be more of a help.
Best of luck,

Patti
