dog heat

Hi,
My dog hasnt come into heat in over a year.Is there a way to "encourage"her into heat? She is only 3 years old,so I know it isnt old age.She is a wonderful Golden Retriever and I would like to breed her to my male Golden.Any help you can offer would be appreciated!Thanks!

Thank you for writing to me.

I would urge you to have some medical tests run by your vet.  Things to look for would be her hormones levels, thyroid etc.  

If she has any genetic problems associated with her not coming into heat, it may be best to consider not breeding her, especially if it could be passed down through the line.

Medical tests and a full examination (possibly an ultra sound of her pelvic region) are the only way to see what the situation is.  You want to make certain that once she comes into heat she will have an easy and successful pregnancy and birth.
