Senior Dog- Urination issues

Question
I have a 12 year old dachshund that I love dearly.  He has always been a healthy dog until the last year.  I've spent a lot of money on vet bills for a spinal infection (he was unable to use his back legs for a few days).

Recently, he has been very stubborn about urinating outside.  When I take him out in the morning, he goes right away and poops too.  When I come home from work at about 5 pm, he walks and walks without urinating. He poops with no trouble though.  I end up taking him outside like 3 times in the evening, and no urinating.  If my boyfriend attempts to pick him up and take him outside (to try to help me out) my dog will either pee or poop or both on my boyfriend.  I know my dog is very jealous, and I relocated to be closer to my boyfriend about 6 months ago.  My dog has never warmed up to my boyfriend.

What do you think? Why won't my dog urinate outside in the evening?  I know you will probably say my dog maybe can sense something is wrong with my boyfriend, but I disagree with that.  My dog is just aging, recently started going blind and is soooo stubborn.  Are there any tricks to convince him to go outside? Sometimes if a neighbor dog is around and uriates, he will go right on top of that spot...but I can't always find other dogs to be outside at the same time that we are....
Help!

Answer
Kelly,

If he does this only when your boyfriend is around, then I think it is a psychological problem,  and yes, dogs do have those.

If not, he may have some kind of medical problem. If he is an older dog, there could be several reasons he is doing this.  I would have him checked out.

God Bless,
Becky
