Question
Hello,

We just adopted a 1-2 year old Bassett Hound/Beagle mix from the Humane Society.  I also have an 11 year old Yorkshire Terrier who is pee pad trained.  So, my 11 year old has free reign of the house all day while we are at work and never has accidents.  She will go outside by herself, pee and come back, or, if we are gone, she goes on the pad.  We are trying to crate train the new dog.  She does not like the crate and the treats haven't seemed to work.  She likes the treats, but won't eat them in the crate.  She waits to eat them until after we have let her out of the crate.  I have a few questions:  1) do we need to also keep her crated at night in our room? 2)She doesn't seem interested in chewing on the Kong filled with peanut butter when we put it in the crate with her...any suggestions? 3) she always knocks over the water we put in the crate with her.  How do we make sure she has water without having a big water mess to clean up when we come home and dog who is thirsty?

Thanks!

Answer
I'm sending some information on crate training and housetraining.

Let me say, dogs do not need to have water in their crate as long as they have free access to it while they are OUT of the crate. They're not going to die of thirst going without for 8 hours at a time.

If you are uncomfortable with that idea, there are some water bowls that attach to or hang from the wire part that are not as easy to tip.
