Puppy Ice Cream

Question
I have a 4.5 month old pug & a 5.5 month old french bulldog.  I have been
searching the internet to see if feeding them ice cream would be safe.  I read
one comment that said "no", as they are lactoseintolerant.  I also saw a recipe
for  "puppy" ice cream: 3 c. non-fat yogurt, 1 cup salt free peanut butter & 1
T of honey..mix & freeze in ice cube tray.  Should this pass the safe test & if
so, how much & how often should I allow this treat?

Thanks, I'll look forward to your comment.

Answer
Yes, avoid regular ice cream due to the lactose.  I would watch the yogurt at that age.  Most puppy chow is high in calcium and adding more can create an unbalance.  I don't think it is quite as bad for the smaller breeds, but can cause real problems in the larger breeds.  You have small dogs.  It doesn't take much of anything that isn't a well balanced diet to cause an unbalance or excess calories.  I wouldn't give them more than a few teaspoons a day if at all.

Be very careful about their weight.  Kept lean, smalldogs will live a long time.  Your dog definitely should be narrower at the waist than the hips and chest. You should be able to easily feel the ribs, but not see them. Each dog is different. Standard recommendations are a good place to start, but each dog must have its food and exercise adjusted to its individual needs.
