Question

Beagle mix
Hello Melissa, my husband and I are considering adopting a puppy from the shelter. We live in a high rise and the building has a 25lb weight limit. We would prefer to get a dog with short hair that would require less grooming. We don't really want a toy dog (nothing against them), so this really limits our options. We live in a very pet friendly community/location and there is a huge park down the street from us. We found a beautiful female beagle mix puppy (8 months-17 lbs) at the humane society. She might have been tired since she was recently spayed, she was very quiet and gentle but affectionate. I read on this forum that beagles howl loudly when they are left alone, this would be a problem since our neighbours would definitely complain, however, I work from home (travel occasionaly) and my husband has similar flexi hours. We are wondering if we should be considering some other breed or look at a younger puppy. Also, I'm worried about housebreaking since we dont really have a yard. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you!

Answer
Hello Maddy;
I am not a fan of "Rescuing" a dog! As there are many pitfalls indeed!
The dogs are in the position they are in due to a horrible circumstance, so, for you to bring one from a shelter into an apartment, I feel is impractical!
I would recommend that you instead buy from a reputable breeder, a dog that will fit from the get go into your environment, and your lifestyle without the influence of other problems to overcome!
Especially since you already mentioned noise!
Beagles will make tons of howling sounds is correct, that is what they are bred for.
The type of dog needed would be a dog breed bred for size restrictions and companionship.
The Dachshund mini version is one I would say perfect!
The Yorkshire terrier, as well.
I can recommend a great doxie breeder: www.ladyjsdoxies.com
She has them already living in her home, and has the best requirements for temperaments!
Check her out.
Then, as far as a Yorkie, I can refer you as well.
The best dog would be one that loves you, and wants to please you from the get go...one from a shelter is going to be totally out of sorts, and with your hours, and your living environment, I feel is a recipe for disaster...
Best wishes,
Melissa
