Question
I have a 10 yr old Pekignese/Jack Russell Mix, she has developed a brething problem where it is not allowing her to sleep, the vet said she has bronchitis and is on steroids. She is not getting too much better and has not slept a wink at night for the past 4 nights. When shes about to doze off she chokes and of course stays away, she's constantly gasping for breath. Blood tests have been taken but I wont get the results until a few days time....I'm afraid she will pass away within that time. Can anyone help, suggest anything???

Answer
Hi Joann,

Thank you for writing to me.  A dog that is in the condition you describe should be put into the hospital with intravenous anti-biotics.  She also should be administered some oxygen.

Get a second opinion and ask for a specialist in pulminary problems.

Pekes have trouble breathing as is and this is what I would consider an acute situation for any dog, let alone one with a flattened face and known breed breathing problems.

Trust your gut!  If you think your dog won't make it through then get her the help she needs!  The anti-biotic she is on may not even be the one that this particular bacteria will respond to.  The vet should have taken a smear and sent it to the lab to determine what the best anti-biotic should be.

I hope this helps. I would consider your dog's situation as urgent.

Many prayers for your dog's speedy recovery!

Best Regards,
Shelley
